Dental implants, step by step.

Six steps from the first conversation to the crown, and what each one involves. No prices are listed here. The written estimate comes with your plan.

What each step involves

  1. Consultation and exam

You talk through what you are hoping for. The dentist examines your mouth and goes over your health history with you.

  2. 3D scan, if the dentist needs one

A CBCT scan is a 3D image of the jaw. The dentist orders one only if they decide it is clinically justified, and only a dentist the RCDSO has authorized can order it.

  3. Treatment plan and a written estimate

The dentist writes out the steps, the visits and an estimate, and you take the plan home to think it over.

  4. Implant placement

The dentist places the implant during a visit planned in advance. They explain what happens on the day before it comes.

  5. Healing time

The dentist sets the healing time for each patient. Follow-up visits are booked as the plan sets out.

  6. The crown is fitted

Once the dentist decides the implant is ready for it, the crown is made and fitted at a visit.

How the scan decision works

A CBCT (cone beam CT) scan is a 3D imaging technique used in dentistry. In Ontario a dentist needs an RCDSO authorization to order a CBCT scan and to read it. The dentist who prescribes it has to decide whether it is clinically justified.

A dentist without that authorization can refer you for a scan but cannot order it. A dental office also needs a CT Facility Permit to run a CBCT machine.

What to bring to a consultation

  • Your health history, including any medications and allergies.
  • Reports or images from earlier dental work, if you have them.
  • Your dental benefits details, if you have a plan.
  • Your questions. Write them down. The plan step is the time to ask about visits and the estimate.

You are not asked to decide anything at the consultation.

Start with a conversation.

Leave a number or an email and say what you would like to talk about. A consultation is where the dentist examines you and explains the options, and nothing is decided at the desk.
